A MESSAGE FROM COACH SIMS
This fall football season at Valley College has been the start of a new beginning. Our new state of the art football facility is completed. It is a special facility that is built to perfection. As a football family, we would like to say thank you to our president, Dr. Tyree Wieder; vice president, Tom Jacobsmeyer; and the dean, “Brick” Durley. A special thanks goes to Los Angeles Valley College athletic director Chuck Ferrero. The football staff, players, and football alumni would like to say, “Thanks Coach Ferrero for all that you do for football and the athletic department. Your hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed. You are an example of what is needed in our coaching profession today: 'quality, effort, and hard work'."
In my football career, I have had the chance to coach some great athletes. During this coaching career, I’ve had the opportunity to meet some of the nation's top coaches at the best universities in America. In community college, I do believe it is important to know coaches at top universities. However, it is also mandatory that today’s athletes understand that academics is their number one priority.
Is the community college athlete aware that an AA degree and 40% of their major must be completed for acceptance into an NCAA Division I or NCAA Division IAA university? Most athletes are unaware of this standard set by the NCAA and four-year institutions. This is a policy mandated by the NCAA and applies to all community college transfers who are not qualifiers out of high school.
Academically, our coaches at Los Angeles Valley College assist athletes on and off the field. I personally monitor each player’s academic progress. Each football player is issued an academic progress report at each term. This allows each athlete and coach to observe the overall academic progress, so that schedule changes, tutoring, and other special needs can be applied immediately. We are determined to have all athletes academically eligible! In my first year as the head football coach (2005), zero athletes were ineligible. We are proud of that statistic and have created the motto: “If you want to be successful in school, do not be afraid to ask for help."
Los Angeles Valley College offers specialized programs for learning disabled students, free tutoring services, and a writing center for a variety of subjects. Reggie Reed is our academic counselor. With his guidance each athlete is given a student educational plan and information about the transfer process to four- year colleges.
In August, 2006, the athletic study hall (with fifteen IBM computers and several new printers) was completed. This study hall will help student-athletes with homework and a variety of other study options. These computers will be connected to the campus internet network which will allow special projects to be completed before practice begins.
I am excited about football at Valley College. The football staff has done a great job of recruiting some of the top players in the San Fernando Valley and the Los Angeles area. Returning players, transfers, and the new incoming freshmen have added a positive “Monarch roar” towards our goals. Each and every year we tell our athletes that we will prepare to be Western State Conference champions. As a football staff, we are well aware that it will take hard work and dedication. At Los Angeles Valley College we demand a commitment toward school work and unselfishness on the football field. We ask that each athlete be self-motivated, disciplined, give great effort, never give up, and expect to win! Each day we must concentrate on having a positive attitude and productive life style.
All team members must be prepared for the Fantastic Four Rules:
1) Faithfulness to our off- season and in-season weight training program
2) Mandatory attendance at weight training, team meetings, and the classroom
3) Respect your team, parents, coaches, and iInstructors
4) Graduate with an AA degree; Transfer to a four-year institution.
Sincerely,
Jimmy Sims
